Japanese Culture Basics

On the whole, the Japanese people are very warm, helpful, and gracious to the western visitor. One can attain a lot of personal growth as well as make a lot of good friends in Japan. Only when the westerner stays here long enough (6months-Year) and tries to go deeper into the Japanese society does the resistance begin.
Good overview to where I'm at: http://www.thejapanfaq.com/FAQ-Primer.html
Though I can't find many social groups online I'll be introduced through church, kendo classes and TESL.  Hopefully I'll take some time to travel north to tokyo or Kyoto.  Any thoughts?

  1. Hi Jordan,
Thanks for the link to the Japanese culture primer. Although I've only read thru to Uchi-Soto -- Us and Them, it is exceptional start to a likely exceptional article. You may wish to read this every day this week to really absorb the wisdom synthesized here. Nothing wrong in learning this on your own...but if you've only got 4 months, it will go fast. I really admire the consultation process and am continuing to work on developing these skills.
Re: travel...YES do as much as you can, especially with a local guide. National parks, mountains, terraced rice fields, sacred sites, Hiroshima ...~AG

  2. Hey Jordan!
Nice place you've got! Sounds like you'll learn a lot. You get to take kendo classes IN Japan? Now that is cool. :)
